From Good to Great
As couples mature in their relationship, they can tap into a desire to take their connection to the next level. Relationship mastery involves building on top of the foundation that has already been laid.
Often after spending considerable amount of time together, a couple may become so comfortable in their connection that a sense of complacency can set in. Routines tend to take the place of adventure. Sex and intimate connection may take a back seat to comfort and safety.
Some couples entering this phase of relationship may begin to question their connection. Others see their connection as strong, and realize they would like to take a deeper dive. Relational exploration for couples who have built a solid foundation can offer opportunities for heightened states of relational mastery.
Leaving a Legacy
This can also be a time for couples to begin considering their legacy; what they would like to offer the next generation.
As couples begin exploring “what’s next”, they can often find themselves coming more alive at work and in other creative pursuits. No longer feeling quite the same pressure to impress and conform, they can find themselves more frequently engaging in authentic conversations with colleagues, friends and each other.
This phase of life offers opportunities to more mindfully engage in life. There can be a deepening of sensory explorations, such as digging in the dirt to plant flowers or garden. A desire to get back to basics can activate pursuits of more sensual nature. Some people begin picking up their old guitar, joining a choir, playing with paint. Even sexual expression can take on a renewed luster, and greater sense of exploration and play.
Engaging in relational exploration at this stage of connection can offer some jewels of personal and relational discovery that may surprise and delight couples who have already established the safety of a solid relational foundation.
