“Leaders must encourage their organizations to dance to forms of music yet to be heard.”
– Warren Bennis

In the above quote Warren Bennis, Pioneer in Leadership studies, offers two quotes regarding leadership. The first offers a distinction between management and leadership. Managers execute. They are responsible for making sure things are handled correctly and well. The second supports the idea that Leaders create organizational vision and direction. They inspire others to “dance to music yet to be heard!”

Great organizations are both well-managed and well-led. They encourage the cultivation of leadership skills within their entire operation. They hold the vision and inspire and empower others to help bring that vision to life. Leaders are not just the people “at the top” of an organization. People lead teams, work groups, projects, and divisions. Leaders inspire people to connect; to put forth greater effort; and to jump on board project with a project, and company vision.

Leadership Categories

Emergent Leaders
Generally these are your talented people who are more newly appointed into leadership roles, or who have been leading less than one year.

Season Leaders
These are your veterans who may have been leading for a while, whose leadership skills could use some polishing.

C Level Leaders / Entrepreneurs
These are the people at the top. Whether this is your company, or you are responsible for a key segment of your company’s operation, how you lead determines how well your business functions.

Spiritual Leaders
If you are a spiritual leader, Pastor, Priest, or Spiritual Advisor in any capacity, you have a unique leadership challenge. You are responsible for guiding people to discover their own relationship with the Divine, within a specific religious ideology. You are “on” most of the time. It is important to have a safe place for you to acknowledge and work through the personal challenges which arise leading in a spiritual environment.

Leadership Development

Courageous Leaders

While some people tend to have more “natural” leadership skills than others, leadership can be honed and learned. Even for those people gravitate towards, leading offers greater challenges as the gravity of a project or role increases. Leaders lead projects and companies, and their greatest and most important challenge is to lead people. So, what does it entail to be a Courageous Leader who engenders support and encourages excellence in others?

  • Courageous leaders find the sweet spot between courage, wisdom and vulnerability. They are willing to challenge the status quo, take calculated risks, learn from their mistakes, their people and other leaders. A wise leader realizes that achieving greatness is not a solo endeavor. They surround themselves with people who are smarter than they are in their respective areas of expertise.
  • Courageous leadership is collaborative. It knows that where two or more with a shared purpose and mission gather, there can emerge far more effective solutions than those which could have arisen from solo thinking.

  • A courageous leader shares power, and acknowledges others for their successes. They don’t get swallowed up by failures. They take time to pause, examine, learn, pivot and keep moving. They rely upon the counsel of others to help them blaze new trails into the unknown.

  • A courageous leader also welcomes and learns from failure and realizes that: “Failure is not the opposite of success, it’s a part of success.” Arianna Huffington

Whether you are leading a team, department, division or the entire organization, you are under a microscope. How you handle each situation, influences the level of respect people hold for you and the organization itself. It’s not just your words that matter, it is what you do, and how you show up that demonstrates who you are and what you believe.
